Course Description
This course offers essential knowledge for creating websites specifically tailored for the Native American community. It addresses the unique opportunity for federally and state-recognized tribes to use the ".nsn.gov" domain, reflecting their status as the "Government". Students will gain an understanding of the specific rules and procedures for registering an "nsn.gov" domain name, alongside insights into global domain name registrations and dispute resolution policies and how tribal intellectual property rights intersect with commercial domain name registrations.
Through discussions on tribal sovereignty, highlighted by an examination of the relevant rules and principles of federal Indian law and policy, the course delineates the critical role of tribal websites as the Native Sovereign Nation online. This exploration is designed to instruct both tribal and non-tribal members about the legal frameworks governing the development of tribal websites. The course introduces participants to the web development tools and skills required to construct these and other specialized websites. By integrating artificial intelligence and popular web development platforms, it offers students in the course practical assignments aimed at achieving tangible outcomes. This comprehensive approach ensures that students not only understand the legal and cultural considerations unique to tribal websites but also acquire the technical proficiency needed for their creation.
Feedback & Updates
Following feedback from students enrolled in our first batch of the course, offered in both asynchronous and synchronous formats in May 2024, we have extended the number of classes. Previously, the course was conducted twice a week over two weeks, with each class lasting two hours. However, the upcoming course has been revised to include six classes of two hours each, spread over three weeks.
Students also expressed interest in having more time to discuss assignment topics with their classmates. As a result, the course will now be offered exclusively in a synchronous format, meaning all classes will meet online via Zoom, and attendance is mandatory.
The new classes are designed to encourage student engagement through group discussions on assignment topics and by building websites from scratch in real-time, following classroom instructions and discussions. Enjoy building websites!
